Admire the view around you and breathe in the scents of nature. Wet your face with the crystal-clear water from the spring. The hike begins. Observe the trees and listen to the birds. Feel the breeze and coolness of the waterfall. Walk alongside the mythical river of Orlias and listen to the stories it has to tell you. Relax on its banks while savoring a cup of coffee.

Learn this too:

According to legend, the river Elikonas or Vafyras or Orlias was named after the noise and roar of its water. Orlias is one of the oldest rivers in Pieria, which “disappeared” out of shame, refusing to purify the Maenads (raving women of Pieria) who wanted to wash their hands there from the blood of Orpheus. Specifically, it is said that the river entered the ground and emerged again on the surface just outside Dion, where it forms its waterfalls. It is one of the most beautiful and serene places in Mount Olympus.

ITINERARY

  • Departure from Thessaloniki

We depart at 07:00 from Aristotelous Square, heading to the chapel of St. Vasilios outside Dion village.

  • Arrival in Dion

We start our ascent towards the red rock waterfall, from the chapel of St. Vasilios. At the beginning, we move through an open field, mostly exposed to the sun. As we keep walking on the trail, our path is under the shade of the trees. The view we have and the changes in the landscape are enchanting.

  • Red rock waterfall

After approximately two hours of hiking, we arrive at the 20-meter-high waterfall, Red Rock. We will pause there to cool off in its refreshing waters and take a break.

  • Orlia's natural pools

We continue our hike for about 1.30 hours downhill until we reach the natural pools and waterfalls of Orlias. There, we will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of the landscape while enjoying a delicious sandwich and a cup of coffee.

  • Return to Thessaloniki

With the breathtaking beauty of  the divine mountain still fresh in our minds and the memories of this incredible day trip to Mount Olympus still lingering, we make our way back to Thessaloniki in the afternoon.
