Learn this too:

Mount Giona is the tallest mountain in Central Greece, situated in Fokida between Mount Parnassus and the Vardousia Mountains. With its highest peak, the Pyramid, reaching 2,510 meters, Giona is the highest mountain south of Mount Olympus and the fifth-highest overall in Greece. In ancient times, it was known as Mount Aselinon.
Its slopes are covered with fir and cedar trees, while in the ravines, you can find plane trees. In the clearings, there are wildflowers and wild roses. Wild animals like wolves, wild boars, badgers, and wild goats inhabit its forests, while on the steep slopes, you can spot birds of prey like eagles and vultures. It also has numerous meadows that support goat and sheep grazing. Although the combination of meadows with the steep cliffs, especially in the west, creates a unique aesthetic landscape and serves as a refuge for wildlife, on the northern, eastern, and southern sides of the mountain, there are bauxite mining operations that affect its appearance.

ITINERARY

  • Day one

We start from Thessaloniki on Saturday at 08:00 and head towards the beautiful village of Pavliani. There, we will begin an enchanting 6-kilometer circular hike of moderate difficulty in Pavliani Park, admiring the thematic exhibits we encounter at regular intervals. The route is magical. Once we finish, we will return to the van and head towards the foothills of  Mount Giona, where we will set up tents in nature. In the evening, we will cook under the stars and relax.

  • Day two

The next morning, we will wake up early and, after having our breakfast in nature, we will begin our ascent to the plateau of Vathia Lakka. During the hike, we will admire the vast fir forest and the impressive peaks. We will gently climb until we emerge completely into an alpine field. As we approach the plateau, one of the most imposing places in Greece, the Pyramid of Giona, will suddenly appear before us. The place has an incredible energy. We will relax on the plateau and, depending on the conditions and the group’s strength, we will start for the summit of Giona. The route to the plateau and back is about 10 kilometers, while to the summit it is an additional 4 kilometers and generally for those with very good physical condition. Then we will return via the same path, have a snack, and get into the van with our destination being the village of Oiti, where we will all stay together in two beautiful houses. In the afternoon, we will have time for a walk in the village and a meal.

  • Day Three

The next morning, we will wake up and, after having our breakfast, we will return once again to the village of Pavliani, this time to embark on a beautiful circular hike that passes by the Pyra of Hercules. The name Pyra of Hercules is derived from mythology, as according to legend, in the location called “Marmara” near the village, Hercules lit a large fire to rid himself of the poisoned tunic of Nessus, which Deianira had unknowingly contaminated. The hike is of moderate difficulty, totaling 13 kilometers and suitable for individuals in good physical condition. We will move through a beautiful fir forest and impressive plateaus. There, we will stop to enjoy a snack and continue our journey until we once again reach the village of Pavliani, where we will sit in one of the cafés to relax. Afterwards, we will return to Thessaloniki in the late afternoon.
