The villages of Northern Tzoumerka are located in Central Pindus, between two rivers, the Arachthos and the Aspropotamos (Achelous). Tzoumerka forms the natural border between Epirus and Thessaly and is also known as Athamanian Mountains. The name Tzoumerka is believed to have Vlach origin, as ‘tzoum’ in Vlach means steep peak. The name Athamanian Mountains is attributed to King Athamas of Orchomenus in Boeotia. He sought refuge in these areas, escaping from his subjects. The locals proclaimed him their king, and Athamas united all the settlements in the region, creating the kingdom of the Athamanians.

The National Park of Tzoumerka, Peristeri, and Arachthos Gorge is an open terrestrial area of approximately 820 square kilometers. Its main purpose is the preservation of natural and cultural heritage, as well as wildlife, along with the development of activities, so that all characteristics, natural, historical, and cultural, of the protected area remain unaffected for future generations.

Within the National Park area, a significant expanse is protected based on existing national and European legislation, encompassing three areas that have been included in the European Ecological Network “Natura 2000.” The diversity of the region’s climate, combined with significant elevation differences and the intense variation in geomorphology, favors the development of valuable, rich, and in some cases, rare flora and fauna. The forests create landscapes of exceptional beauty, with the changing colors presented during the seasons. The fauna of the area is of particular interest as it hosts rare and protected species such as the wolf, bear, wild goat, eagle, otter, fox, and more.
