The Enipeas River has its sources in the location of Prionia, at an altitude of 1000 meters, and its length reaches 9 kilometers. Along its course, there are natural pools used as swimming spots. The water temperature is slightly above zero degrees Celsius
According to the ancient myth, Enipeas was a handsome young man, loved and desired by all the goddesses of Olympus. However, he preferred Aphrodite, which angered Hera. To get revenge, she transformed Enipeas into a river. Additionally, mythology states that Enipeas was such a powerful river that he could defeat all the gods in battle except for Zeus.
Located in a natural hollow between two small streams that flow into the Enipeas river, is the Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios. It was founded in the 16th century by Saint Dionysios in Olympus and during the years of Ottoman rule it experienced an economic and spiritual prosperity. After 1821 it was occupied by the Turkish army, set on fire and looted. In 1943 it was blown up by the Nazis because Greek resistance fighters were hiding in its buildings.
