Did you know that Norway is home to the world’s longest road tunnel? The Laerdal Tunnel, located in the Sogn og Fjordane region, stretches for an incredible 24.5 kilometers (15.2 miles). It connects the towns of Laerdal and Aurland, two popular destinations near the Sognefjord. What makes this tunnel even more unique is its design; it includes special “rest areas” with artificial lighting to give drivers a sense of daylight, as the tunnel’s length and darkness could otherwise make the drive exhausting. The tunnel, which opened in 2000, is an engineering marvel and provides a safer and faster route for travelers. It’s also a testament to Norway’s expertise in tunnel construction, as the country boasts over 1,000 tunnels in total, more than any other country in the world! The Laerdal Tunnel is not just a practical route but also a testament to Norway’s unique approach to navigating its rugged, mountainous terrain.

ITINERARY

  • Day 1 July 5

Our adventure begins with a warm welcome — either at Oslo’s Gardermoen International Airport or directly at our cozy hotel, depending on arrival times. Once we’re all settled in, we’ll head out for a relaxed stroll through the charming streets of Oslo, soaking in our very first impressions of Norway. It’s the perfect moment to connect, take in the northern vibe, and get excited for the unforgettable road trip that awaits us.

  • Day 2 July 6

The next morning, we’ll wake up early and, after enjoying a delicious breakfast, our road trip continues. Our first stop: Stavanger. Although the journey is long, it’s surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, forests, and shimmering lakes. Just before reaching Stavanger, we’ll visit the iconic Sverd i fjell monument — “Swords in the Rock” in Norwegian. This impressive landmark consists of three giant swords embedded into a rock, right beside a fjord (Hafrsfjord). After our visit, we’ll head to our hotel, settle in, and then venture out for an evening stroll around the city to admire sights like Gamle Stavanger (the Old Town) and the majestic Stavanger Cathedral.

  • Day 3 July 7

We rise early and, after a hearty breakfast, we gear up for one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring hikes in all of Norway — the legendary Preikestolen, also known as Pulpit Rock. This dramatic cliff towers 604 meters above the Lysefjord, and at its summit lies a near-perfect flat plateau, roughly 25 by 25 meters. From here, we’ll soak in jaw-dropping views over the fjord — and of course, snap some unforgettable photos.

The hike covers a total distance of 9 kilometers with an elevation gain of 528 meters — a rewarding journey through nature’s finest.

After descending, we hop back into our van and continue toward the majestic Langfossen Waterfall. Depending on the time and our energy, there’s an optional hike to the top of the falls — an adventure worth taking for those up for it.

Next, we drive on to Låtefossen Waterfall, a true marvel of nature where twin streams cascade down a towering mountainside, falling a total of 612 meters. We’ll stop here for photos and to take in the beauty of the moment.

Finally, we make our way to the charming town of Odda, where we’ll check into our hotel and later wander through its beautiful streets, surrounded by towering mountains and peaceful fjord views.

  • Day 4 July 8

We start our day early, and after a good breakfast, we set off on a unique hike that will take us all the way to the breathtaking terminus of the Buerbreen Glacier. The landscapes we’ll witness along the way are nothing short of spectacular — dramatic, raw, and awe-inspiring. The hike is about 6 kilometers in total, with an elevation gain of 380 meters, and rewards us with unforgettable views of the glacier’s icy blue tongue descending from the Folgefonna ice cap.

After our hike, we return to the van and begin our journey to the beautiful city of Bergen. Before entering the city, we’ll make a stop at the Fantoft Stave Church, a striking wooden church originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1170 and relocated to Fantoft in 1883. Though destroyed by fire in 1992, the church has since been carefully reconstructed to its former glory.

Upon arriving in Bergen, we’ll check in at our hotel, settle in, and then head out to explore the charming city. We’ll wander through the colorful Bryggen Wharf, visit the vibrant fish market, and stroll along the lake and through the city’s narrow alleyways, soaking in its rich history and coastal charm.

  • Day 5 July 9

Today is all about slowing down and soaking in the beauty around us. After a relaxed breakfast, we hop into our van and hit the road toward the charming little town of Røn. Early in our drive, we’ll stop at two truly stunning waterfalls — Tvindefossen and Money Drop. Get your cameras ready, because you won’t know where to point first!

Next, we’ll drive through the Lærdal Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in all of Europe — stretching almost 24 kilometers! It’s a surreal experience to glide beneath the mountains for such a long stretch.

Our next stop is nothing short of jaw-dropping — the Stegastein Viewpoint, perched 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord. The view is simply indescribable — panoramic, powerful, and deeply peaceful. Words won’t do it justice, but your photos will help!

After taking in the scenery and snapping the must-have shots, we’ll continue our journey, stopping along the way to grab supplies and maybe a bite to eat.

By late afternoon, we’ll arrive at our destination — cozy little lakeside cabins, nestled right on the water’s edge. This spot is a dream. We’ll cook dinner together and unwind at our own private beach, letting the calmness of the lake set the tone for a perfect evening under the Norwegian sky.

  • Day 6 July 10

We wake up early, and after preparing our breakfast, we’ll enjoy it by the peaceful lake, surrounded by nature’s beauty. Once we’re ready, we hit the road, heading towards our final destination — the stunning Innlandet region.

Today’s itinerary includes a challenging but absolutely breathtaking hike. We’ll walk the Jotunheimen Knutshøe trail, a 14-kilometer path with an elevation gain of 600 meters. This is not a trail for those with a fear of heights, but it’s a journey full of awe-inspiring views. For those who prefer a lighter option, we can take a shorter but equally beautiful route instead.

After the hike, we’ll continue our journey toward our final destination, where we’ll stay in cozy little chalets nestled deep in nature. Once we’ve gathered everything we need, we’ll cook together and unwind in the serene beauty of our surroundings, letting the peacefulness of the landscape wrap around us.

  • Day 7 July 11

After a good night’s sleep, we wake up early, prepare our breakfast, and get ready for the journey back to where it all started — Oslo! The drive once again offers incredible views, with lush green meadows and sparkling lakes along the way.

Our first stop will be at a scenic overlook where we can admire Oslo from above. This is the perfect spot for a short break before we head out on a delightful hike: the Frognerseteren – Skjennungstua trail. This easy, 9-kilometer trail with a 210-meter elevation gain follows a forest path lined with vibrant green meadows and a stunning lake.

After the hike, we’ll relax and enjoy a coffee with a view of the city of Oslo, before continuing on to our hotel.

In the afternoon, we’ll hit the streets of Oslo, visiting some of the city’s famous spots. We’ll check out the famous Food Street, stroll through the beautiful Vigeland Park, known for its sculptures, and pass by the magnificent Royal Palace. We’ll make sure to take in the vibe of the city and feel like locals as we soak up the atmosphere.

  • Day 8 July 12

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. And so, the time has come for us to pack our bags, enjoy our final breakfast in Norway, and head to the airport early in the morning. We’ll board our flight back to Greece, carrying with us a treasure chest of memories, images, and emotions from this unforgettable road trip — nearly 2000 kilometers through the stunning and wild beauty of Norway!
