Learn this too:

One of the least inhabited lake islands in Europe is located here, in Ioannina. The island has a world first…it doesn’t have a name! They call it “island of Kyra-Frosyni” or “island of Ioannina” and it has about 250 inhabitants, a community mainly of fishermen. It is a rock drowned in pine trees, with a unique stone settlement around its natural harbor. Although small, the island has seven monasteries – the third largest monastic community in Greece, after Mount Athos and Meteora.

ITINERARY

  • Day One

We will depart from Thessaloniki on Saturday at 8:30 AM, heading to the beautiful city of Ioannina. Upon arrival, we will head to the Castle of Ioannina, specifically to Its Kale, where the palace of Ali Pasha is located. There, we will explore the site, considered the most vibrant archaeological park in Epirus.

Next, we will visit the Museum of Silversmithing, a thematic museum that delves into the technology of silver craftsmanship during the pre-industrial period. At the same time, it serves as a regional museum, focusing on the history of silver crafting in the Epirus region.

Afterward, we will head to Lake Ioannina, where we will board a boat to Kyra Frosyni Island. On the island, we will take a short circular hike, passing by significant landmarks and visiting the impressive Museum of Ali Pasha.

Later, we will return to the city of Ioannina, check into our hotel, and prepare for an evening stroll around the city.

  • Day two

In the morning, after waking up and enjoying our breakfast, we will head to the beautiful Voidomatis River! It’s time for rafting! The Extreme Rafting team will be waiting for us there to provide our gear and give us a brief lesson. Then, we’ll board the rafts and experience an unforgettable adventure!

After about 2.5 hours, we will get into the van and head to the impressive village of Megalo Papigko. From there, our hike will begin. We will follow a trail toward Mikro Papigko and continue to the natural rock pools (Kolymbithres), where we’ll cook outdoors.

Later, we’ll return to Megalo Papigko and stroll through its picturesque alleys. We’ll then return to the hotel and finish the day with a night walk in Ioannina.

  • Day Three

The next day, we will wake up in the morning, enjoy our breakfast, and pack our belongings before heading to the impressive Perama Cave. This cave, a three-level palace of incomparable beauty and breathtaking formations, is ranked among the most magnificent in the Balkans.

After our visit, we will board the van and travel to the picturesque Metsovo, specifically to the Averoff Gallery. The E. Averoff Gallery houses a permanent collection of representative works by some of the most significant Greek painters, engravers, and sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Gyzis, Lytras, Volanakis, Iakovidis, Parthenis, Maleas, Galanis, Hatzikyriakos-Ghikas, Moralis, Tetsis, and many more. The museum’s art collection is considered one of the most comprehensive and significant of this period.

After exploring the gallery, we will head to the central square of Metsovo, where we’ll have free time for coffee or a meal. We will return to Thessaloniki in the late afternoon
