Ancient Stagira is located approximately 500 meters southeast of the present-day settlement of Olympiada, on a small, mountainous, and beautiful peninsula called “Liotopi.” The city occupied both hills of this peninsula, the coastal one to the north and a larger one to the south, separated by a low isthmus. It was founded around 655 BCE by colonists who arrived from Andros in search of mineral deposits in the area. It was an independent city with its own currency, which featured a wild boar as its emblem.
The location of the city, widely known as the birthplace of Aristotle, is firmly established both through references in ancient writings and through the research of modern scholars.
